Abstract

Clayey soils in general and expansive soils in particular have been a major concern to geotechnical engineers for many years. Mainly if they contain swelling minerals such as smectite or illite, may cause severe damage to structures, especially when these soils are subjected to wetting and drying conditions. High expansion and reduction in shear strength and foundation bearing capacity will take place due to the increase in water content of these soils. The engineering properties of these kinds of soils can be improved by using additives and chemical stabilizers. This paper presents an experimental geotechnical study on investigating the behavior of low and high compressibility of clayey soils stabilized with steel slag.  Steel slag is a waste or by-product material produced during manufacturing process of steel and iron metals. The test was carried out by conducting the geotechnical experiments on clayey soils with various percentage of steel slag such as 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 12%. The outcomes of this study can provide important conclusions concerning the improvement of treated soils.
