Abstract

Water is used for quite a lot of purposes by individuals but, the level of purity of the water being consumed is very critical since, it has a direct effect on health. Safe drinking water should generally be free from heavy metals, turbidity, organic compounds and pathogen. Conventional treatment methods often include sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. Among the coagulating agents used in water treatment, ferric sulphate or alum (aluminium sulphate) is some of the most widely used salts. Since, Aluminium is strongly neurotoxic it may cause Alzheimer’s disease. Addressing these problems, current research sounds to identify a novel method for purifying water at lower cost with less energy, while at the same time minimizing the use of chemicals and impact on the environment. In this research an attempt has been made by employing Nirmali seed powder as an environmentally friendly coagulant for the removal of turbidity from wastewater generated from college canteen. Nirmali Seed is a natural coagulant material with polyelectrolytes. These polyelectrolytes are responsible for coagulation property of the chosen seed. In this study, Jar tests were carried out for the collected samples by employing raw seed as a coagulant to minimize the chemical pollutants. The treatment in most of the cases is based upon coagulation and removal of few species. The samples collected from canteen were tested for its characteristics viz., pH, turbidity, BOD, COD, Sulphate, nitrate, calcium, magnesium, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, and organic matter. The performance of this system was also compared with turbid water collected from places near Coimbatore. After analysis the status of physico- chemical parameters were compared with standard values prescribed by BIS. Characterization studies were performed using FTIR Spectrophotometer. The topmost goal of this study is to find out the viability of Nirmali Seeds as a coagulant in grey water purification.
